Seismic Joints & Seismic Upgrades
Seismic Joints: Chelsea Contracting is an approved installer of EmSeal, WABO, BAS and Balco for seismic joints.
An example that we are particularly proud of is Auckland’s Sky Tower, where we installed the world’s first round seismic joint of its kind around the base. We have also been responsible for fitting the seismic joints for numerous fire departments, governmental agencies, shopping centres, schools, churches & high-rise buildings.
Seismic Upgrades: A modification to existing structures to make them more resistant to seismic activity, ground motion, or soil failure due to earthquakes. When a building is below its NBS rating, then restrengthening is required to get it to its necessary level.
Examples of these upgrades can include adding:
- Structural steel
- Carbon fibre
- Helifix bars
- Phython fixings
Fanshawe Street Carpark’s shearwall structural upgrade exemplifies this well. Chelsea Contracting drilled approximately 10,000 stutter bars, which were drilled and epoxyed. Then they reinforced approximately 30 tonnes of reinforcement steel and shotcreted upon completion. Sections of the floor on every level were broken out to the shear walls and tied into the wall and concreted upon completion.
Further project examples include:
- Downtown Carpark
- Victoria Street Carpark
- Mt Wellington Fire Station
