Our Team

Dominic Sutherland – Director

Dominic is a New Zealand qualified licensed Building Practitioner. He completed a 4-year apprenticeship in Carpentry & Joinery and earned Trade Certificate in 1988.

He spent some time in New Zealand before heading to England for 13 years to further learn his trade. During his time in England, Dominic worked in several capacities within the building trade for large construction companies, before starting his own company. Some of his most memorable jobs whilst in England include refurbishment works to: No 10 Downing Street, White Hall, Cabinet War Rooms, The High Court of Justice, Mallets of Bond Street, Lord & Lady Renwick’s residential property, Lady Annabelle Jones’ jewelry store and multiple Westminster Banks. He is particularly proud of setting a record whilst working on the high-rise concrete construction of FC5 Canary Wharf, concreting the floor slab of the 20th floor i.e., 5,500m2, set-up, installation of reinforcement steel, box, pour, screed & trowel within 12 hours.

On his return to New Zealand in 2001 he worked as an independent developer building, restoring, developing plus subdividing multiple luxury homes/sections, which were highly sought after once on the market.

He restored the Auckland Laundry Building in Grey Lynn. This required a complete refurbishment of electrical, plumbing, lift, roof plus external and internal structure as well as a fire and seismic upgrade. During this time he was based in the building, thus managed and leased the building for the owner. He also completed fit-outs of the leased spaces for its tenants.

The standard of the concrete restoration works at the Auckland Laundry Building meant that Dominic was asked on an ever-growing basis to do more concrete repairs by the main chemical companies. Dominic felt there was a need in the industry for a specialised concrete repairs company. His experience gained from working in the UK on older English-style construction, means he can complete such works to a high standard and with a greater understanding than most.

Dominic has worked in many sectors of the industry from high-rise concrete construction to banks, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, offices and shop fit-outs. He has also worked across fast-track fit-outs, historic restoration on Grade 1 and 2 listed buildings as well as high-end luxury restoration under many challenging environments.

Since diversifying into the concrete repair industry in 2006, Dominic has expanded into further facets of the industry including concrete repair, wet and dry crack injection, waterproofing, tanking, flooring, bridge joints, grouting and carbon fibre seismic strengthening to name a few.

Chelsea Contracting has worked on various projects such as: SH20 repairs and installation during construction; Victoria Park Tunnel; Dominion Road Ramp C Surface Waterproofing as well as several bridges, tunnels and projects for Water Care and NZ Rail.

Dominic has shown he is able to adapt to any challenge given to him within the broad spectrum of the building industry, whilst in some of the most difficult environments. Through leadership and a specialised team of experienced contractors, he has been able to countlessly deliver first-class products within budget and time.
